ABOUT US

MISSION

Creating outdoor experiences that build confidence and community

CHALLENGE

The health crisis has worsened as Americans are spending more time indoors and in front of digital screens than ever before.

VISION

To bring new innovations that break down barriers and make nature and the outdoors the go-to place to form life-long healthy habits all can enjoy.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Our guiding principles are symbolized in our Flywheel logo:
Stacks Image 38053
BLUE SPOKE = ATTITUDE
It begins with a mindset that creates the confidence and belief needed for a healthy life.
RED SPOKE = ADVENTURE
Life is an Adventure which always begins in the outdoors and nature. That’s at the core of all we offer.
GREEN SPOKE = SIGNIFICANCE
Our approach takes people from success to significance by emphasizing personal growth through shared experiences and community support.
We believe that when all three spokes — Attitude, Adventure and Significance — are present, your life gains momentum, like a flywheel.

OUR HISTORY

2013

CycleHealth was founded with a mission to create a new cycle of health, starting with kids. We knew that kids had been at the forefront of big societal changes — like insisting that America quit smoking, buckle up, wear bike helmets, and start recycling — and we wanted to empower them to do it again. This time, leading us all to be more active in the outdoors.

With innovation in our DNA, we launched four world-class adventure events for kids and families, seasonal training challenges to get families outside year-round, and the nation’s first pediatrician-approved Sweat Rx prescription program.

2017

Joining Forces with the Y.
As our programs and desire to make an impact grew, we said YES when invited to become part of the YMCA of the North in 2017. With the strength of the Y behind us, we have realized tremendous growth in participation while bringing several innovations to the community including the self-guided, scavenger-like adventure courses called Unlock It!

2021

The YMCA of the north announces the expansion of CycleHealth into the Y Adventure Lab, focusing on growing outdoor and nature programming. Think of the “Lab” as a test kitchen to dream up, test and build new events, programs and offerings that motivate us to spend more of our time doing fun and meaningful activities in the outdoors and nature.

Betsy Grams, Co-Founder and Executive Director

Betsy is the spirited and visionary leader of the Y Adventure Lab. Her positive energy and belief in the possible is contagious. If you’ve done one of our events, you’ve probably been encouraged by her along the way.

Though being a uniter and spirit-builder comes easy to Betsy, she is also the strategic and organizational leader of our team. From the Sweat Rx program she leads with pediatric clinic partners to corporate, school, and volunteer teams, Betsy is the uniter that keeps people from all backgrounds coming back to embrace all that life has to offer through nature and the outdoors.

After growing up as a kid who never liked to sweat, she overcame those old limiting beliefs and discovered the joy of testing her own limits at marathons, triathlons, and ultra-marathon trail runs. In recent years she’s finished trail runs from 50K to 50-miles and even up to 100K. Through it all she remains modest, but fully engaged as an encourager of others believing we all have a special finish line in our future.

Tony Schiller, Co-Founder

As a kid, Tony was cut from seven different sports teams and he never forgot what that felt like. Maybe that’s why he’s so passionate to see that every kid feels great when they finish one of our races. He knows that all it takes is one finish line at the right moment for a struggling kid to get on a new life path.

That’s what happened to Tony when he started running in 1973. Though never diagnosed as having attention deficit as a kid, he had all the telltale signs and struggled in school as a result. Daily runs helped quiet his mind and gave him a healthy way to release nervous energy. Filled with a new life focus, he trained hard and has gone on to win numerous awards in racing, including NCAA All-America honors, a try out for the US Olympic Marathon team, 79 triathlon overall wins, plus, seven world titles and 18 national titles for his age group in triathlon. Two of those came In 2021, when Tony won both the Olympic and Sprint titles at the USA Triathlon National Championships.

Besides being the creative force behind our events and many of our Unlock It! courses, Tony is available to speak to school and corporate groups on partnerships with the Y Adventure Lab. He is a gifted storyteller who motivates with the same enthusiasm in every presentation that he brings to his own competitions.

Tom McDowell

After spending virtually his whole career with Three Rivers Park District, the former Associate Superintendent brings decades of valuable experience and passion for the outdoors and nature programming to his work on the Y Adventure Lab board. Upon learning about our work, Tom saw immediately how our events for kids and families fit perfectly with the mission of the Park District, and he was instrumental in forming the powerful partnership that exists today between the Y Adventure Lab (then CycleHealth) and Three Rivers Park District.

In retirement, besides hobby farming (ask him about his giant pumpkins) and getting to do more great cross country biking/camping adventures, Tom brings his keen eye and knowledge from years as a naturalist, conservationist and outdoor specialist to our mission at the Y Adventure Lab. He believes deeply in our efforts to break down barriers to equity so that all people can enjoy the benefits of the outdoors and nature.

He believes nothing is more important than a student’s self-worth. It’s a good bet that if you attend a sporting event or activity for ISD 110, you’ll see Pat and his wife Kathy cheering on the students. He lives and breathes the chance to help young people feel they belong and are loved by the community. They live in Waconia and have raised three adult children that also love to be active.
